RE: Sedona, Az

Cottonwood would be a good alternative, it's not that far away.

RE: Geocaching and RVing

We have been doing it for several years now and really enjoy it. We are always surprised how many caches are out there and how many are in interesting places.

Addresses nearby come up, but not my work
The gps is smarter than you give it credit for, it knows that you know how to get to work so it ignores it. :R

You need to be looking at a 4wd so the transfer case can put in neutral.

RE: NUVI 650, not all that hot

No gps will always give you the BEST route but it usually will get you where you want to go. You cannot blindly rely on any of them, no matter what brand, and
you really need to consult a good map before you go. You have to realize that the gps has many ways to choose from and does the best it can given what it knows.
As far as using it for geocaching, it was not designed for it, it was designed for highway use. If you wanted one for geocaching you should have bought one designed with that feature. I think the only Nuvi which is geocaching compatible is either the 500 or 550.

RE: First time in RV - California Trip Advice

IMO you are spending way too many nights in cities. I would suggest getting out and seeing more of the country. From what you have planned you could do from motels with a rented car, why rent a RV?
I would recommend Hearst Castle (not like back home), and the coastal redwoods. Drive up the coast to Oregon, much more scenic than hanging around S.F.

RE: RV calender

I'm looking at one put out by Motorhome magazine, I doubt if they have an '09 yet.
There are several sites where you can create your own calendar, you might do a google search on "create calendar" or something like that.

RE: Hearst Castle

Very large parking lot and there shouldn't be that many people there this time of year. Enjoy! One of my favorite places.

RE: Summer update....finally

we found that the carbon monoxide detector and clock radio/CD player (that stay on 24/7) were a drain on our battery
I think I would find the power wire to the clock radio and install a switch so I could turn it off or on. A simple rocker switch would do the trick. I don't think I would do anything with the carbon monoxide detector.

RE: 2008 Jeep Liberty as toad

After two days without starting the engine, the battery was dead enough to prevent the starting of the Jeep.
Did you use a braking system like Brake Buddy? If the switch was off I don't understand how there would be a drain, it would be like just sitting in the driveway.

RE: 2008 Jeep Liberty as toad

I have an '08 Liberty and the drill is really simple after you've done it a couple of time. The only reason for going into reverse is to make sure it doesn't move and is really in neutral.
If you leave the tranny in neutral you will fry the tranny, a friend found out the hard way.
If you do a search on '08 Liberty in the Dingy forum you will find a lot of information.
The biggest question is if you really have to disconnect the battery. Not good if you use a Brake Buddy. So far no one has gotten a good reason from Jeep on why to disconnect the battery.

RE: Has anyone tried the new Nuvi 255 wide yet?

I have the 255 but not the wide screen. So far I like it, especially it telling you what street to turn on. The down side like most gps's is that it doesn't always give the correct name where a street could have several names, like hwy 155, also know as Crane Rd. With it telling me where to turn I don't really need the wide screen, especially in a vehicle the size of a Jeep, I have a Wrangler and a Liberty. One thing it does on occasion is display the speed limit. It's always good to know how much over you are going so you can mentally calculate the fine. lol

RE: how to plan an out west trip

We once did a trip from So. Cal. to Zion, Bryce, Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Lake Louise, Jasper, and spent 2 days at the Calgary Stampede.
4500 miles in 3 weeks. By the end of 3 weeks I couldn't remember what we did the first week, sensory overload! Doable, just a blur tour. You can at least get a flavor of the areas and decide if you want to came back later and spend more time.

RE: how to plan an out west trip

Get a computer program such as Microsoft Streets and Trips or Trailer directory on CD.
I agree. What I like about TL directory it will give you a recommended campground for the end of the day. You have the option of either miles or hours as what makes up a day's travel. I would suggest hours, miles may vary based upon speed.
How long are you allowing for this trip? I hope it's not less than 3 weeks, 2 would really be pushing it.
